The endearing güegüechos José and Agustina, known in the village by the diminutives Don Chepe and Niña Tina, tally my years with corn kernels, adding them one by one from left to right, just like the ancestors with the dots marking the centuries on the stones. The tale of the years is a sad one. My age makes them grieve.

-The bewitching spell of the chipilín—Niña Tina speaks—robbed me of the consciousness of time, understood as a succession of days and years. The chipilín, a little tree with sleepy eyelids, destroys the action of time, and under its virtue one reaches the state in which they buried the chieftains, the old priests of the realm.

-I heard a guardabarranca sing—Don Chepe speaks—under the full moon, and its trill dripped honey upon me until it left me fair and transparent. The sun did not see me, and the days passed without touching me. To prolong my life for all time, I attained the state of transparency under the spell of the guardabarranca.

-It is true—I spoke last—, I left them one April morning to go out into the forest in search of deer and doves, and, now that I remember, they were as they are and were a hundred years old. They are eternal. They are the ageless soul of the stones and the unaging earth of the fields. I left the village very early, when dawn was breaking over the cavalcades along the path. Aurora of water and honey. White breath of the cattle. Among the liquidambars the mockingbirds sang. The verbena flowers were about to burst.

I entered the forest and continued beneath the trees as in a succession of patriarchs. Behind the foliage, the horizon gleamed with gold and stained-glass colors. ( ) I went watching the sky. Primitive, inhuman, and childish, in those days they called me Cuero de Oro, and my cabin was a haven for old hunters. If they could speak, their walls would recount the stories they heard told. From their walls hung hides, antlers, and weapons, ( ) When I was a boy, I found in those prints that wounded deer resembled Saint Sebastian. ( ) And at every step, the nimble hares of the echo leap, run, fly. In the loving depth of the gloom: the cooing of doves, the howling of the coyote, the running of the tapir, the passage of the jaguar, the flight of the kite, and my own step awakened the echo of the wandering tribes that came from the sea.
